Halococcus archaea. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Halococcus salifodinae archaea (brown). Archaea are single-celled organisms that are like bacteria, but also have characteristics of other organisms. Clumps of these cells are seen here. H. salifodinae is found in water with high concentrations of salt, and so is known as a halophilic (salt-loving) archaea. These high salt concentrations would be deadly to most other forms of life, and so H. salifodinae is also known as an extremophile. Magnification: x9500 when printed 10cm wide. | |
