Colon cancer due to genetic mutation, light micrograph. This specimen shows adenocarcinoma of the colon. Adenocarcinoma is a cancer of the glandular lining that is found in many different organs, including the digestive tract. Colon cancer is one of the most common cancers in North America and Western Europe. It is thought to be connected to a diet high in fat and low in fibre. This image shows variably-sized branching and anastomosing glands surrounded by desmoplastic stromal reaction. The tumour was associated with mutations in one of the DNA mismatch repair (MMR) genes resulting in microsatellite instability (MSI). The cause was hMLH1 promoter methylation resulting in the silencing of the gene. | |
