Tubular colon polyp, light micrograph. This specimen shows tissue from a tubular adenoma. Tubular adenomas make up around 80 percent of all colon polyps. They are composed of round or oval shaped glands. Tubular adenomas are generally small and show low-grade dysplasia. This is seen here in the glands in the top half of the image. There is hypercellularity, glandular crowding, nuclear enlargement, nuclear hyperchromasia, and loss of mature goblet cells. These features impart a basophilic appearance to the adenomatous epithelium. Colon polyps can turn cancerous. Haematoxylin and eosin stain. | |
