High grade invasive ductal breast cancer. Light micrograph of cells in a tissue sample from an invasive ductal breast cancer (malignant tumour). This specimen has been assessed for the amount of cell division (the mitotic rate) and other factors. The assessment showed high-grade nuclei (score 3), no tubule formation (score 3) and a high mitotic rate (score 3). This indicates a high grade of cancer (grade 3). At least four mitotic figures are visible here (with expanded and dividing nuclei, dark purple). Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women. Symptoms include painless lumps in the breast, a dark discharge from the nipple, and an indentation of the nipple. Early diagnosis can be made by mammography or self-examination. Once a cancer has spread, the prognosis is poor. | |
