Cerebral aneurysm. Posterior 3D computed tomography (CT) angiogram scan of an aneurysm (swelling, upper left) in the left middle cerebral artery in the brain of a 48-year-old man. The aneurysm is seen as a swelling in the artery at left compared to the normal appearance of the artery at right. An aneurysm is a blood-filled dilation in a blood vessel wall. It is caused by a weakening of the vessel wall, which may be caused by hardening of the vessel (atherosclerosis), high blood pressure or injury. If left untreated an aneurysm can rupture, which is often fatal. This scan was done as part of an assessment of a subarachnoid haemorrhage (bleeding on the brain). | |
