Acorn woodpecker (Melanerpes formicivorus) on a branch. Acorn woodpeckers are larder hoarders. Breeding groups create a food store by drilling holes in a dead tree, and stuffing acorns into them. The group defends the tree against potential robbers. As well as acorns, they also eat insects, fruit, seeds and sometimes tree sap. Photographed in Costa Rica. | |
