Magnetizing a metal object with a bar magnet. Illustration of the technique used to magnetize a metal object, in this case a saw blade, with a bar magnet. Passing one end of the magnet over the metal surface in a straight line will align the magnetic dipoles within the metal. This will produce a magnetized object that can in turn act as a magnet. The object needs to be made of a suitable metal such as iron or steel. Whether the magnetism is permanent or temporary depends on the metal used. | |
