Mars 2020 rover cameras, illustration. The Mars 2020 mission is scheduled to launch in July 2020 and land its rover on Mars in February 2021. The rover will have 23 cameras: 9 engineering cameras, 7 science cameras, and 7 entry, descent and landing cameras, plus an autonomous drone, the Mars Helicopter Scout (MHS). Shown here are front and rear hazard cameras (6 Hazcams), two Navcams, and the science cameras: two Mastcam-Z cameras, SuperCam (remote micro-imager) and (on the robotic arm) SHERLOC (Scanning Habitable Environments with Raman and Luminescence for Organics and Chemicals) with its WATSON (Wide Angle Topographic Sensor for Operations and eNgineering) camera, and PIXL (Planetary Instrument for X-Ray Lithochemistry) with its micro-context camera. Mars 2020 is part of NASA's Mars Exploration Program. |
