Mount Sharp on Mars, Curiosity rover image. This view shows clay-bearing rocks that are a future target of study. Mount Sharp stands in the middle of Gale Crater, which is 154 kilometres in diameter. This mound, which Curiosity has been climbing since 2014, likely formed in the presence of water at various points of time in Mars ancient history. It is considered an ideal place to study how water influenced the habitability of Mars billions of years ago. The Curiosity rover is part of the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) mission. It landed on Mars on 6 August 2012, on a mission to investigate the Martian climate and geology. Image obtained on 11 January 2018. | |
