Kilauea eruption earthquake map, 2 May 2018. Map of ongoing intrusion and earthquake activity along Kilauea's East Rift Zone. Kilauea is a volcano on the main island of Hawaii. Starting on the afternoon of Monday 30 April 2018, magma beneath Kilauea's Puu Oo crater (lower left) drained and triggered the collapse of the crater floor. Within hours, earthquakes began migrating east of Puu Oo, signalling an intrusion of magma along the middle and lower East Rift Zone. As of about noon on Wednesday 2 May 2018, these earthquakes were continuing along the lower East Rift Zone. The orange dashed line marks the approximate area within which most of the earthquakes were located based on automatic earthquake locations and analysis by seismologists. This seismic activity is part of what is known as the 2018 lower Puna eruption. | |
