Apollo 12 astronaut changing fuel. US astronaut Alan Bean, lunar module pilot for the Apollo 12 lunar landing mission, using a fuel transfer tool to remove the fuel element from the lunar module's descent stage. This was then placed in the Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generator (RTG, lower centre), the power source for the Apollo Lunar Surface Experiments Package (ALSEP). This photograph was taken by mission commander Charles Conrad during the first extravehicular activity (EVA) of the mission. Apollo 12 was the second manned mission to land on the Moon, arriving in the Ocean of Storms on 19 November 1969. Astronauts Charles Conrad and Alan Bean made two excursions on the surface for a total of 7 hours 45 minutes. Photographed on 19 November 1969. | |
