Male mayfly. This male mayfly (order Ephemeroptera) has long front legs used to catch the female from within a mating swarm. The male has larger eyes than the female mayfly, angled upwards and capable of detecting ultraviolet light. They are thought to be used during courtship to detect females flying above them. Most mayflies live only for a day or two and die soon after mating. | |
