Female lion (Panthera leo) drinking from a puddle in the road after heavy rainfall. Lions are social cats that live in groups (prides) comprising several females, adolescents and young and one or two males. Females (lionesses) perform most of a pride's hunting, which occurs both at night and by day. They hunt co-operatively, with several females encircling the prey before making the kill. Prey includes antelopes, zebra and smaller mammals. Lions are found throughout sub- Saharan Africa and parts of Asia. Photographed in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, which lies in both Botswana and South Africa. | |
