Arctic sea ice maximum, March 2018, satellite image. This image, showing the Arctic above the Bering Strait (lower left) is based on satellite data. The Arctic sea ice (white) reaches a maximum in around March, at the end of the Arctic winter. This maximum extent for 2018 covered 14.48 million square kilometres, only slightly more than the previous year's record low. This maximum can be compared to the minimum reached later in the year in September. The Arctic's sea ice maximum extent has dropped by an average of 2.8 percent per decade since 1979. The sea ice data for this image, obtained on 17 March, is from the AMSR2 (Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer 2) sensor on the Japanese Shizuku satellite. | |
