Resveratrol inhibiting quinone reductase 2. Computer illustration of a molecule of resveratrol (spheres) bound to the active site of FAD (flavin adenine dinucleotide) quinone reductase 2 (QR2). Resveratrol is naturally produced in red grapes and other plants in response to stress, injury and radiation. The antimicrobial properties of resveratrol help to protect the plant under these harmful circumstances. Resveratrol has also been found to have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties in humans and to decrease the risk of cardiovascular disease. It acts as a QR2 inhibitor and it is possible that the chemopreventive and cardioprotective properties of resveratrol are the result this inhibitory action. | |
