Roman sculpture. Ancient Roman bronze sculpture known as 'The Prisoner of the Rhone' found in the River Rhone at Arles, France. This 70 cm high sculpture represents a warrior or a slave in the throes of servitude who has perhaps received his death-sentence. The statue's posture shows that the artist had a talent for twisting and shortening the form in order to emphasize the instability of the subject's captive state. Photographed at the Departmental Museum of Ancient Arles, France. | |
