Martinus Veltman (born 1931), Dutch physicist. Veltman is best known for his pioneering work in theoretical physics. This is a branch of physics that uses mathematical models and physical abstractions (extrapolating from specific cases to general ones) in an attempt to explain phenomena. Veltman was awarded the 1999 Nobel Prize in Physics (shared with former student Gerardus 't Hooft) for his work. Photographed on 17 September 2003 at CERN (the European particle physics laboratory) at a presentation of Veltman's book 'Facts and Mysteries'. | |
