Stephen Hawking and Robert Aymar at CERN. British physicist and cosmologist Stephen William Hawking (1942-2018) is with CERN Director-General Robert Aymar (born 1936) during a visit in 2006. Hawking visited CERN between 24 September and 1 October 2006, giving two lectures and touring the LHC (Large Hadron Collider). CERN is the European particle physics laboratory, where experiments are carried out that help advance knowledge in areas such as quantum physics and cosmology. Hawking is famous for his work on cosmology, quantum gravity and black holes. He is confined to a wheelchair due to the condition amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. He was elected Fellow of the Royal Society in 1974, and was made a Companion of Honour in 1989. He was Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge from 1979 to 2009.
