Stephen William Hawking (1942-2018), British physicist and cosmologist, with other visitors by the CMS at CERN in 2006. CERN is the European particle physics laboratory, where experiments are carried out that help advance knowledge in areas such as quantum physics and cosmology. Hawking is in the mounting hall of the CMS (Compact Muon Solenoid) experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Hawking is famous for his work on cosmology, quantum gravity and black holes. He is confined to a wheelchair due to the condition amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. He was elected Fellow of the Royal Society in 1974, and was made a Companion of Honour in 1989. He was Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge from 1979 to 2009. In 2007, he founded the Centre for Theoretical Cosmology at Cambridge where he was Director of Research.
