Stephen William Hawking (1942-2018), British physicist and cosmologist, visiting CERN in 2006. CERN is the European particle physics laboratory, where experiments are carried out that help advance knowledge in areas such as quantum physics and cosmology. Hawking is in the ATLAS section of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) tunnel, as part of a visit to the Theory Unit of the Physics Department at CERN. Hawking is famous for his work on cosmology, quantum gravity and black holes. He is confined to a wheelchair due to the condition amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. He was elected Fellow of the Royal Society in 1974, and was made a Companion of Honour in 1989. He was Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge from 1979 to 2009.
