Folliculitis.Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of bacteria attached to a hair (brown), cultured from an infected hair follicle. Folliculitis is inflammation of the hair follicle due to infection, most commonly with bacteria. Bacterial folliculitis is usually due to Staphylocoocus aureus but other skin bacteria may be involved. Folliculitis starts with the introduction of a skin pathogen to a hair follicle. Hair follicles can also be damaged by friction from clothing, an insect bite, blockage of the follicle, shaving, or braids too tight and too close to the scalp. The damaged follicles are then infected by bacteria. Folliculitis can affect people of all ages. Magnification: x3000 when printed at 10cm wide. | |
