Little owl (Athene noctua) chick at a nesting site, taking its first steps outside the nest. The white downy coat of the young chicks is soon replaced by the juvenile feathers, which resemble those of the adult. This owl is native to warmer parts of Europe, Asia and North Africa. It was introduced to the UK in the 19th century and is now naturalised there. It is a small owl, only around 25 centimetres in height, feeding on insects, earthworms and amphibians. Photographed in West Horsley, UK. | |
