Alphonsus Crater on the Moon, Ranger 9 image, 1965. Ranger 9 was launched by NASA on 21 March 1965. It impacted the Moon on 24 March 1965, sending images such as this back in the final few minutes before it was destroyed. The first images were taken from a distance of 2363 kilometres. Ranger 9 transmitted over 5000 high-quality images over the final 19 minutes of flight. This view, close to the moment of impact, shows rilles (long, narrow depressions that resemble channels) on the floor of Alphonsus Crater. | |
