City walls of Thessaloniki at night. These walls form part of the ramparts of the Heptapyrgion fortress (also called the Eptapirgio and the Yedi Kule). This defensive complex dates from the Byzantine period, with reconstruction occurring during the Ottoman era. This site is one of several forming the UNESCO World Heritage Site known as the Paleochristian and Byzantine monuments of Thessaloniki. Photographed in 2009. | |
