Eroded limestone cliffs at Warrnambool, Victoria, Australia. This low cliff formed from marine limestone during the Miocene period, between 5 and 20 million years Before Present. The sedimentary nature of the rock is visible in the form of a layered structure, with the outline of the finest layers now obscured by erosion. Although apparently barren of life, these cliffs are home to the blue periwinkle (Nodilittorina unifasciata) small colonies of which are visible (blue) in the deeper crevices at the bottom of the picture. | |
