Polar bear family tracks. The polar bear (Ursus maritimus) is the world's largest land predator. It is found throughout the Arctic circumpolar regions, although its range is limited by the extent of the pack ice. Polar bear cubs stay with their mother for between a year and a half and two and a half years. In recent years, the effects of global warming have caused sea ice to melt earlier in the season and glaciers to recede. This climate change is affecting local wildlife populations, such as polar bears, which are declining in numbers due to starvation.
