Albrecht Durer's 'Landscape with Cannon', 1518. Woodcut etching by German artist Albrecht Durer (1471-1528). At right are Turks, with European soldiers guarding the cannon, which bears the arms of the German city of Nuremberg. The cannon is not an advanced model for the time. It is thought that this etching was produced as a response to the threat posed to Europe by the expanding Ottoman Empire. At the time of publication of this print, the Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I and Pope Leo X had made a call for a Crusade, a call that was unsuccessful. | |
