The Cradle of Humankind. This landscape, known as the Cradle of Humankind, is a paleoanthropological site in Gauteng Province, South Africa. Declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1999, the site contains a complex of limestone caves, the richest site in the world for the discovery of early hominids. Many of the finds have been fossils of Australopithecus africanus, an ancestor of modern humans that lived between 3.3 and 2.1 million years ago. | |
