Australopithecus africanus fossil skull. Australopithecus africanus was an extinct hominid species which may be an ancestor of modern humans. This fossil (catalogue number STS 71) was discovered by R. Broom and J. Robinson in 1947 in the limestone caves at Sterkfontein, South Africa. A. africanus lived from 3.3 to 2.1 million years ago throughout much of Africa, and this fossil is estimated to be about 2.5 million years old. | |
