ISS lunar transit, December 2017. Time-lapse of six images of the International Space Station (ISS) transiting a Full Moon. The transit speed was around 8 kilometres per hour. The ISS Expedition 53 crew of six astronauts were on board: Acaba, Hei, Bresnik, Misurkin, Ryanzansky and Nespoli. The ISS orbits the Earth at an altitude of around 390 kilometres, compared to the Earth-Moon distance of around 385, 000 kilometres. The Moon is around 3480 kilometres across, compared to the ISS width of around 100 metres. The ISS orbits the Earth in around 92 minutes. The Moon's orbit takes around 27 days.
