Cliffs Shaft Mine Museum. Miners' identity tags on display in an above-ground office at the Cliffs Shaft Mining Museum, Ishpeming, Michigan, USA. This iron ore mine, which originally opened in 1868, was closed in 1967 and turned into a museum in 1999. Here, visitors can walk through the access tunnel to the shaft and view museum exhibits in the former 'dry' building, where miners prepared for work. Miners would carry these brass tags with them while in the mine and replace them at the end of the shift, ensuring that everyone was accounted for. | |
