Examining a malignant melanoma on the abdomen of a 79-year-old man. Melanoma is a form of skin cancer that arises from melanocytes, the cells that produce melanin, the pigment that gives skin its colour. The main cause of melanoma is exposure to ultraviolet radiation in sunlight. It is an aggressive cancer that often spreads (metastasizes) to other parts of the body. Treatment is with surgical excision of the melanoma. Most moles are harmless, but should be examined at regular intervals through a magnifying lens and photographed with a scale bar as shown here. For this melanoma without the scale bar, see image C038/1679. | |
