Fomalhaut star's dust ring. Computer illustration showing how the ring of dust around the star Fomalhaut (centre) is maintained. Particles in the dust ring are kept inside the ring by gravitational interactions with planets, whilst the faster-moving inner planet transfers energy to dust particles, moving them outwards and deeper into the ring. At the same time the slower-moving outer planet removes energy from the particles, causing them to drop inward.
