British soldiers with artificial limbs, First World War. Limbless British soldiers being fitted with artificial legs at Roehampton, London, England. Roehampton House opened on 28 June 1915 to provide rehabilitation services for soldiers who had lost limbs in the First World War (1914-1918). By the end of the war, some 26, 000 patients had been fitted with prosthetic limbs. The site became Queen Mary's (Roehampton) Hospital, gaining an international reputation in the field of prosthetics. From the photographic section of the Imperial War Museum. | |
