Prehistoric fossil bear vertebrae from Sima de los Huesos site. These fossils are from the extinct prehistoric bear Ursus deningueri. The remains of more than 160 bears have been found here, dating to around 420, 000 years ago. The Sima de los Huesos ('Pit of Bones') cave is located in the Atapuerca mountain range in the province of Burgos, Spain. Over 5000 human and animal fossil remains have been found here, dating from 350, 000 years ago, many of which are remains of Homo heidelbergensis. It is thought that the site was used as a cemetery.
