Vega, or Alpha Lyrae, is the fifth brightest star in the sky, situated in the northern hemisphere constellation of Lyra. At only 25 light-years away it is a very close in astronomical terms. A blue star, Vega is young, at roughly one-tenth of the age of the Sun. It is known to play host to a debris disc, similar to the Kuiper belt around the Sun. This disc of dusty, rocky material is very extensive, with a radius well in excess of 120 astronomical units (1AU being the Earth-Sun distance). This artist’s conception images a view of the debris disc with Vega in the background. | |
