Jean-Daniel Colladon (1802-1893). 1867 illustration of the Swiss physicist Jean-Daniel Colladon. Colladon developed a technique for illuminating water fountains. The principle involved light being trapped in the water by total internal reflection. He discovered this effect in 1841 while lecturing at the University of Geneva, Switzerland. This led to illuminated fountains being established all over Europe, including at the Universal Exposition (World Fair) of 1889 in Paris, France. Colladon also worked on the speed of sound in water. | |
