Glomerulus capillary structure. Cutaway illustration of the structure of a glomerulus, a structure found in the kidneys. This section passes through podocytes (red) surrounding the glomerular capillary (brown), an example of a fenestrated capillary. Pores in the capillary allow outward diffusion of proteins and small molecules. The outer layer of the glomerulus consists of podocyte cells that interlock to cover an inner coiled ball of capillaries. The action of the blood (red blood cells shown) flowing through these capillaries filters toxins from the blood. Each kidney has hundreds of glomeruli that filter blood. The resulting fluid drains to the bladder as urine. | |
