Axons (red arrows) projected from this region ennervate vast areas of the central nervous system (CNS), including the spinal cord, cerebellum, thalamus and cerebral cortex. Alzheimer's disease is a neurodegenerative disease caused by the formation of protein plaques in the brain. The symptoms include memory loss, personality changes and confusion.
