Elisha Gray (1835-1901). 1867 illustration of the American electrical engineer Elisha Gray. Gray developed a prototype of the telephone independently of Alexander Graham Bell (1847-1922). He submitted his patent for the invention on the same day as Bell in February 1876, but Bell's patent was granted first and after two years of litigation Bell was credited as the inventor. Despite this, Gray filed 60 patents during his lifetime, including one for an early closed-circuit television system that he called a telephote. He also founded the Western Electric Manufacturing Company, the parent firm of the Western Electric Company. | |
