Franz Achard (1753-1821). 1867 illustration of the German chemist and physicist Franz Karl Achard. Achard studied a wide range of topics, including meteorology, electricity and telegraphy, but is best known for his work on sugar refining. He was elected to the Royal Academy of Sciences at Berlin in 1776, where he became director of the physics section. He was elected a foreign member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in 1782. His work on sugar beet refining reached an industrial scale when he opened his first refinery in 1801, with the technology spreading to other countries over the following decades. | |
