Jack Steinberger (born 1921), US physicist. Steinberger shared the 1988 Nobel Prize in Physics with Leon Lederman and Melvin Schwarz for an experiment at Brookhaven in 1962 that led to the discovery of the muon neutrino. They showed that two types of neutrino exist and that they may be paired with different leptons, forming the basis of the modern theory of elementary particles. Steinberger joined CERN, the European particle physics laboratory, in 1968, working on the ALEPH experiment on the LEP Collider Ring. He retired in 1986. Photographed at CERN on 17 February 2012. | |
