Georges Charpak (1924-2010), Polish-French physicist. Charpak gained his doctorate at Paris in 1955, and in 1959 joined CERN, the European particle physics laboratory. In the course of his research, Charpak became involved in the development of new types of particle detector. In 1968, he invented the multiwire proportional counter and the drift chamber. These allowed large detectors to operate quickly and be built cheaply. In the following years he stayed at the forefront of detector design. Charpak was awarded the 1992 Nobel Prize in Physics for his work. Photographed on 1 December 2008. | |
