Tsung-Dao Lee (left) and Peter Jenni (right) at CERN, the European particle physics laboratory. They are visiting the ATLAS detector, with Swiss physicist Peter Jenni (born 1948) leading the ATLAS project until 2009. ATLAS (A Toroidal LHC Apparatus) is part of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), used to carry out particle physics research. In 1956, Lee and Chen-Ning Yang showed that parity conservation (mirror-image symmetry) is violated in interactions via the weak nuclear force. For this work, they were awarded the 1957 Nobel Prize in Physics. Lee was visiting CERN to mark the 50th anniversary of his Nobel Prize. Photographed on 30 August 2007. | |
