Lark Quarry dinosaur stampede. Illustration of a Tyrannosaurus-like theropod dinosaur triggering a stampede of smaller bipedal dinosaurs on a prehistoric mudflat. The tracks of the dinosaurs were preserved and fossilised in what is known as the Lark Quarry Dinosaur Trackways in Queensland, Australia. It is thought that the smaller dinosaurs were coelurosaurs and ornithopods. The science of ichnology deals with the study of traces, in this case trace fossils (here, footprints). Separate taxons are used in ichnology, with the ichnotaxa identified here being Skartopus, Wintonopus, and Tyrannosauropus. This event is thought to have taken place around 95 million years ago, during the Cretaceous. | |
