Pterosaur and skimmer fishing techniques, illustration. Pterosaurs (left) were flying reptile that were carnivorous predators, feeding on fish (as shown here) and other small animals. They flew with wings formed from a membranous structure stretched between the ankles and a lengthened finger. This is a Rhamphorhynchus pterosaur. It during the Late Jurassic, 150-148 million years ago. It had jaws with teeth, a long tail and a wingspan of just under two metres. The bird it is being compared to at right is the tern-like Rynchops, a group of birds known as skimmers. | |
