Prehistoric limestone figure. Headless seated statuette carved out of globigerina limestone in Malta. This statue has its legs tucked to the right and its arms are asymmetrically placed with both hands resting on the right thigh. Instead of its head it has a fairly regularly cut socket in the shoulder pierced by biconical perforations. This seems to indicate that the head was interchangeable and could be removed. To date, no heads that fit such statues have been found and it is thought that these heads were made of some perishable material like wood. This artefact is from the Hagar Qim site. This site dates to the period 3600-3200 BC. Photographed at the National Museum of Archaeology in Valletta, Malta. | |
