African fish eagle (Haliaeetus vocifer) with a fish in its talons in flight. This bird is found in sub-Saharan Africa near water. The female, the larger of the sexes, has a wingspan of up to 230 centimetres. The African fish eagle spends most of the day perching in a high tree near water. From this perch it will swoop down on fish, catching them with its feet. Although the majority of its diet consists of fish, the African fish eagle also feeds on flamingos and other water birds, as well as carrion. Photographed on the Chobe river floodplain, Botswana. | |
