Gregor Mendel's early life as a monk. Austrian botanist Gregor Johann Mendel (1822-1884) joined the Augustinian friars in 1843 at the age of 21. This image dates from around 1847 or 1848, during his early years at St Thomas' Abbey in Brno (in what is now the Czech Republic). Mendel later became abbot at the abbey in 1867. From 1856 to 1863, he carried out experiments with peas, breeding almost 30, 000 pea plants in his monastery garden. His results revealed the statistical laws of heredity. Mendel, who postulated the existence of a unit of heredity that is now called the gene, is now considered the founder of genetics. He is in his mid-20s here, and is possibly second from left in the back row. | |
