Harlow Shapley speaking to politicians and scientists, 1945. US astronomer Harlow Shapley (standing, 1885-1972) is speaking to a gathering of US scientists and politicians at a 1945 event sponsored by Science Service, an organisation dedicated to informing the public of the latest scientific discoveries and achievements. Shapley was director of Harvard College Observatory from 1921 to 1952. Those either side of him in this photograph are (left to right): US National Bureau of Standards director Edward Uhler Condon (1902-1974), US Senator Brien McMahon (1903-1952), US Representative Helen Gahagan Douglas (1900-1980) and former Chairman of the War Labor Board William Hammatt Davis (1879-1964). In late 1945, Senator McMahon was developing the Atomic Energy Act of 1945, which established the US Atomic Energy Commission. | |
